Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP Angus MacNeil welcomes further confirmation from Scotland Office Minister Lord Duncan that the Contract for Difference (CfD) auction will take place in the first quarter of 2019.
This follows a meeting in July between Mr MacNeil and Richard Harrington MP, Parliamentary under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), who at that time expressed his determination to progress island Contracts for Difference (CfD) and his view that auctions would take place in the first quarter of 2019.
Commenting Angus MacNeil MP said:
“This confirmation by Scotland Office Minister Lord Duncan, that the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is still committed to an auction in the first quarter of 2019 is welcomed and echoes the views expressed to me by Richard Harrington MP at our meeting in July. Combined with the news from BEIS that they will be submitting the case for islands renewables next week this is a further step in the right direction.
“Despite the submission to the EU being two weeks later than originally planned, it still keeps us on track for the auction in the first quarter of 2019 which is what is important for the development of islands renewables.
“Following approval from the EU the next step will be getting legislation through the House of Commons. It is important that island renewables are ring-fenced within Pot 2 and also that the islands are not expected to pay for the grid upgrade on the mainland as is the case with offshore renewables who do not have to bear the cost of upgrade.”
