Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP, Angus MacNeil, together with representatives from the renewable energy sector participated in a roundtable discussion on remote island wind developments in Scotland.
The meeting was organised by Minister for Energy and Industry Richard Harrington MP. The aim of the meeting was to hear views on how the sector is developing, particularly how these projects could benefit local communities.
Commenting after the meeting Angus MacNeil MP said:
“When I met with Richard Harrington MP in July he told me that he was determined to progress with island Contract for Difference (CfD) and he said he was committed to doing so, whilst mindful that this has to go through state aid clearance at the European Commission and through the House of Commons.
“Today’s roundtable discussion was informative and worthwhile. The issues of particular interest to the Minister are: what the scope of community would be, how community or communities money would be controlled and on what basis could communities as a whole or community members access funds. – All is under consideration and the Minister confirmed that he will be opening a consultation.
“Tongue in cheek he joked at the meeting that I had written the Conservative manifesto when it comes to island renewables. Of course these latest moves are what I have pushed for a long time, but regardless of political party it is pleasing to see that we have someone like Richard Harrington as a Minister, sincere in his efforts to make island renewables happen.”
