Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP, Angus MacNeil has welcomed a commitment by the Energy Minister, Michael Fallon MP that he would look at the possibility of considering some island renewable electricity generation as serving the domestic island market.
Speaking after the debate Angus MacNeil said:
“Today in the Commons, I challenged the UK government on the pricing structure of electricity transmission charging, which has a double whammy for the islands, in that energy produced here faces high transmission costs and also domestic electricity consumers face prices 4% to 12% per unit above places like London.
“I proposed to Mr Fallon that an amount of renewable that is produced here in the islands should be considered as serving the domestic island market, thus helping to eliminate locational charging.
I am pleased to say that to his credit, Mr Fallon understood the point and said that he would take it away for further consideration, hopefully if the logic wins out, this should benefit all islanders.
