Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan, and MP, Angus MacNeil have welcomed news that the proposed aquamarine wave power installation near Fivepenny in Lewis has received full consent from the Scottish Government.

Alasdair Allan commented:

“Today’s news represents further support for the islands renewables sector from the Scottish Government, and creates further pressure on SSE and the UK authorities to move forward with the interconnector to the mainland which the renewables sector needs.

“Wave power is an untapped but potentially enormous source of energy in the islands, and aquamarine’s project represents a technology that if tried at Fivepenny, could be much more widely applicable around Scotland.

“Today’s planning decision is positive news for the island, and one which I hope will bring economic benefits with it.”

Angus MacNeil MP said:

“This project has the potential to boost the local economy, which we all welcome.  However, it again highlights the urgent need for an interconnector between the Hebrides and the mainland.”
