Commenting on the announcement from Scottish Fuels that they are to offer retailers the option to end their contracts, Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP Angus B MacNeil said:

“On the face of it this seems to be a welcomed announcement and a freeing up of the fuel market, which is a welcome move from Scottish Fuels, particularly when they say they are happy to serve retailers who shop around between distributors.

“This comes a week after I and other Highland MPs met with the Scotland Office Minister, David Mundell to discuss the issue of fuel and where we called for a meeting with the distributors and the Westminster Government to hear their side of the issue.  This announcement should make that meeting easier and I welcome the announcement from Scottish Fuels.

“This is probably the biggest change in the island fuel markets since we got the rural fuel derogation, which itself was the biggest in decades.

“I hope this move will help the fuel market become more competitive and that we see cheaper prices at the pumps.

“It is good that Scottish fuels are willing to compete with other distributors on an even footing, that itself is a welcome move.”
