Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP, Angus MacNeil today attended the official opening of The Nicolson Institute in Stornoway, the largest Secondary School in the Hebrides.

Mr MacNeil a former pupil of the Nicolson Institute said:

“I was delighted to attend the official opening of the fabulous new Nicolson Institute.  I attended The Nicolson Institute for 5th and 6th year, as in the 80s it was the only 6th year secondary in the Hebrides.  As a former pupil it was an honour to attend today’s official opening as MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar.

“Those who attended heard an inspiring and interesting key note speech from Professor Donald Macleod, who emphasised the importance of attaining wisdom as well as education in school.  The Nicolson Institute School Band also gave a beautiful rendition of ‘Highland Cathedral’.

“There was a surprise at the end.  All the guests were asked to wait an extra 15 minutes before we could leave the assembly hall, so perhaps it could be argued that I along with councillors and many others were part of the first detention since the building was officially opened.” J

“I wish the pupils, Rector and Staff many happy years in the new building.”
