SNP Na h-Eileanan an Iar MP Angus Brendan MacNeil has welcomed the announcement today (Monday) of 120 million pounds of investment for broadband in the Highlands and Islands.

Mr MacNeil said,

“This is an important announcement of funding as it improves what is known as ‘backhaul’. It is time and time again the issue cited by mobile phone firms for part of their rural difficulties. It is also the path to better broadband.

“I am pleased to see the Scottish Government moving in its priorities of getting world-class broadband coverage to rural areas of Scotland.
“This funding will help to provide essential upgrades to our mobile network infrastructure.
“Over the next several months HIE will be working with contractors and BT to bring these upgrades to fruition.

“This is an important next step in ensuring that the Outer Hebrides is not left waiting at the station when the next generation of broadband comes. Had this not come we would be left behind, it is both welcome and a mighty relief to have this confirmed.”
