MACNEIL WELCOMES MOVEMENT ON ETVs AFTER PRESSURE

SNP Na h-Eileanan an Iar MP Angus MacNeil has welcomed movements by the UK Government indicating that a further extension of the emergency towing vessels contract is expected after their current contract ends in January. Last week Angus MacNeil MP tabled questions to the UK Government regarding the future of the ETV contracts.

Mr MacNeil said,

‘I am happy to see that a bit of pressure has resulted in what looks like, yet another, reprieve for our tugs from the UK Government.

‘While I am happy that the Minches will, most likely, have an additional three months of tug cover we need a more comprehensive, long-term plan on maritime safety.

‘I do not want to be in this position again in April 2012 and, potentially July 2012. This piece-meal plan cannot continue in perpetuity.

‘Maritime safety may not be at the forefront in the minds of the Coalition but, it is always paramount in the hearts and minds of the employees and families who work at sea.

‘It is time for a real, long-term plan on maritime safety.
